Police have arrested the driver of a pick-up truck after he allegedly fled several crashes on Highway 401 Friday afternoon.
At about 1:30pm, OPP units responded to several collisions on the eastbound 401, west of Kitchener. Witnesses said the driver of a black Chevrolet had fled and minutes later, another call came in about a crash involving the same vehicle near Homer Watson Boulevard in Kitchener.
An OPP officer caught up with the driver just north of Hamilton, but the driver allegedly sped away. Rather than chasing him, police followed at a distance while the driver repeatedly crashed into other vehicles.
In Milton, he lost his front wheel and continued to drive erratically until he pulled over at a construction zone near Yonge Street. He reportedly tried to take a vehicle there, but someone fought him off.
When police began arriving, the driver locked himself in his vehicle. But the officers got him out and arrested him.
He was taken to North York General Hospital for assessment.
Witnesses should call the OPP at 519-654-0150 or 1-888-310-1122.
