There are a number of reasons why several cities have not gone green with their taxis, The Globe and Mail has reported.
Two-thirds of Toronto’s cabs are leased and because the drivers have to pay for their own gas, the owners may not see the point in converting their cabs to hybrids.
Cab owners also worry about having to spend $4,000 in replacement batteries for their cars.
Toronto’s mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson wants the city to offer breaks on fees as incentives to owners who convert their cabs when their plates come up for renewal.
