Lunch Tuesday: Sushi Sky

I’ve been eating at Sushi Sky (478 Yonge St.) for years. It’s always been cheap, and close to where I lived or worked or went to school.

It’s hard to top their lunch specials for price and speed of service – a table of 15 people were seated and digging into soup and salad within moments of entering.

Then, it was on to the $5.99 specials.

I’ve eaten them all, from teriyaki to tempura, from snapper to salmon, all or almost all accompanied by the ubiquitous California roll. With unlimited tea, it’s the cheapest, most filling lunch going.

So this time, obviously, I went with something different.

Deep-fried oysters ($4.99) led the parade and when our flustered waitress couldn’t quite explain what was in the sauce, she brought out a bottle from the kitchen.

Turns out it’s Bull-Dog brand tonkatsu sauce, normally served with pork.(At first, we thought we were eating HP sauce with our seafood.)

Despite a language barrier, our server was really helpful, making multiple trips to the kitchen to answer our question.

I also ordered the spicy tuna roll ($4.50), because when I branch out from spicy salmon, I reach far, baby.

Then it was an eel roll ($4.50) and salmon sushi pizza ($6.99). The so-called pizza has nothing in common with actual pizza, except that it is round and has toppings.

The deep-fried rice cake (pictured below), comes topped with spicy mayo and your fish of choice, and surrounded by wasabi paste and pickled ginger. Just like Nonna used to make!

I kid, I kid. My Nonna won’t eat raw fish.

Sushi Sky is often packed at lunch and no wonder: Even without ordering the specials, a meal for two people was less than $25. It’s cheap and filling, and the service is friendly and fast.
