Donations Needed Following Wellesley Fire

Donations are desperately needed following a Wellesley Street fire that left 1700 people homeless.
Fire officials provided an update Monday afternoon, saying the building is still structurally unsound and there’s no word on when residents will be able to return to 200 Wellesley St. East.
About two-thirds of affected tenants have made their own alternate living arrangements, while others are housed in temporary shelters, including a nearby community centre.
They can’t return until crews finish up their work, including shoring up the floors and ceilings of the affected units.
Clothing, cash and diapers are being accepted at 519 Church Street Community Centre.

The fire began in a 24th floor unit around 5pm on September 24. The smoke and flames sent 11 people to hospital but none of them were seriously injured.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office says it may be months before the cause of the massive six-alarm blaze is determined.
The 30-story apartment building is by Toronto Community Housing and contains 711 units.
If you would like to help, cheques should be made out to The City of Toronto, 200 Wellesley Fire. They can either be dropped at the Wellesley Community Centre (495 Sherbourne St.) or sent to the Toronto Office of Partnerships Metro Hall, First Floor, 55 John Street, Toronto ON M5V 3C6.
Gifts of other kinds are also welcomed. If you have any new or gently used clothing, it can be dropped off at 519 Church St. The residents are in particular need of: new underwear and socks, both regular and plus sizes, jackets or hats, older boys’ clothing, blankets and towels, school supplies, back packs, toiletries, and shoes.
Gift cards for grocery, drug and department stores are also much appreciated.
