Read The Sign: Election Signs Spring Up

With exactly three weeks to go until Torontonians cast their ballots in the city’s mayoral election, the candidates are now jockeying for the ever-so prestigious campaign sign space.

Bright and early Monday morning, these familiar signs have been spotted everywhere from lawns, street sides and shop windows.

“It’s a clear sign, pardon the pun, that the election draws near. Only three weeks to go for people to make a decision about what kind of a city they want,” George Smitherman said.

However, according to Toronto’s rules, signs are not permitted on highways or on trees.

Many suburban areas, such as Mississauga, Vaughan and Oakville have been overrun with signage for weeks already.

“This is it,” Joe Pantalone said.

“This is the month. You have to make a decision.”

Rocco Rossi said that putting up a sign spurs discussion.

“If you’ve got a sign in the lawn, you’ve got a neighbour asking you, “why? Why did you come to that decision?”” Rocco Rossi added.

Each municipality is in charge of dictating the own campaign signs rules and regulations.

Advance voting in Toronto’s election begins Tuesday.
