New city bylaw affects driveway parking for newly constructed homes

TORONTO, Ont. – New homeowners in Toronto beware: that beautiful new house could come under a new zoning by-law that restricts the number of cars you can park in your own driveway.

Under new rules that went into effect October 1, newly constructed homes with a single-car garage can only park one car in their driveway.

If your new house has a double garage, you will only be able to park two cars in the driveway.

Councillor Howard Moscoe told 680News the new regulation will not affect areas where exiting bylaws already allow the parking of more cars.

“It will fundamentally change the way people construct houses or buildings from here on in, but it doesn’t go backwards and pre-write history,” Moscoe said.

He said if you sell your already established house, the bylaw won’t affect you, but rather new builds only.

Violators could be fined up to $5,000, but it’s unclear how long the bylaw will be in effect.

Mayoral front-runners Rob Ford and George Smitherman said if elected they will repeal it.
