Crunch Time In Mayor’s Race

With just one day to go until Torontonians head to the polls, it’s shaping up to be a very tight race between the two front-running candidates, city councilor Rob Ford and former Ontario health minister George Smitherman.

The last poll showed a virtual dead heat between the two, with Toronto’s deputy mayor Joe Pantalone continuing to run in a distant third.

All three men will spend a final day on the campaign trail Sunday.

While the rain is forcing Ford to reevaluate his route, Smitherman will still be making the rounds, talking to voters around the city. He’ss be at Downsview Park, then later at a North York farmer’s market.

Ford has campaigned predominantly on a campaign of promising to slash taxes and clean up waste at City Hall. He also promised to chop the number of city councilors and their expenses in half, while adding 100 more police officers to the streets.

Smitherman meanwhile pledged to freeze taxes for a year to review spending. He also said he will reviatilize the waterfront and give renters a 2 per cent break on property taxes.

Pantalone on the other hand will be hitting the “better way.” He’ll be riding the subway, talking to voters about their concerns and his campaign promises.

He has promised to preserve services and implement more affordable housing around the city.

Polls will be open from 10am to 8pm Monday. In order to vote, you must to be a Canadian citizen, a Toronto resident or own property in Toronto, and be at least 18-years-old.

You also must present a voter card or two pieces of identification. One must show a name and signature and the second showing a name and address – like a driver’s licence or health card.
