Review: Morning Glory

If you’re a fan of morning television shows like Citytv’s Breakfast Television, and you like light-hearted comedies, then Morning Glory is the perfect flick for you. It’s a fun look at what goes on behind the scenes on a TV news show and delivers a lot of laughs and sweet moments.

After she is fired from her post as producer on a small New Jersey morning television show, Becky (Rachel McAdams) lands a gig as an executive producer of “Daybreak” on the fictional Manhattan-based network IBS. Tasked with turning the show around, which is perpetually lagging in rankings, she brings in the grumpy, hard-news reporting Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) to co-host the show, very much against his will. The other anchor, Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), thinks Becky is too young and naive to run the show, and everyone else is just waiting for her to fail. Will the ratings rise or will she be heading back to Jersey with her tail between her legs?

McAdams is one of the most sincere actresses working today and makes it hard to not like Morning Glory. If it wasn’t for her, this could easily have been a huge disaster (the script is really not that great). Ford is his typical curmudgeonly self and expertly plays up the serious newsman role. Keaton is not used to her fullest, but is great with what she has to work it, and also reminds me of many female anchors I’ve crossed paths with in the TV business. Patrick Wilson stars as the romantic interest, Adam, and was the only person I felt was totally miscast. The good news is he’s barely given any screen time and the focus is hardly ever on their romance.

For the most part, Morning Glory is a cute, fluffy, charming film with the occasional hilarious moment. It really is just like watching your favourite morning television show.
