U.S. Senate Votes To Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

In a historic move, the U.S. senate voted Saturday to repeal the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on homosexuality in the military.

The vote passed by a margin of 65-31, with eight Rebublicans crossing the floor to vote along with the Democrats.

The legislation will next go to President Barack Obama for his signature.

Before it takes effect, the Department of Defense will draft regulations to ensure the policy doesn’t hamper the American war effort overseas.

Since “don’t ask, don’t tell” came into effect in 1993, more than 14, 000 service people have been discharged from the military for being gay.
