Rob Ford’s Chief Of Staff Stepping Down

The architect behind Mayor Rob Ford’s election victory is stepping down.

According to a report in the Globe and Mail, Nick Kouvalis will leave his post to lead the city’s campaign to contract out garbage services.

The Conservative strategist from Windsor pushed some of Ford’s key campaign promises through council, including scrapping the vehicle-registration tax, cutting councillors’ budgets, and making the TTC an essential service.

He also, notoriously, set up a Twitter account for a made-up supporter of rival George Smitherman so he could get hold of a damning tape of a phone call between Ford and an OxyContin user. And he had one of Ford’s staff members pose as an anonymous caller on John Tory’s radio show to rattle the potential candidate and keep him out of the mayoral race.

Kouvalis will remain in the top job for another three or four weeks.
