SIU Investigating Barrie Death

An autopsy will be performed Monday on an Innisfil man who died after an altercation with police.

Suler Saamel, 44, died in hospital on January 22.

The South Simcoe Police Service contacted the province’s Special Investigations Unit on Saturday night.

Police say they were called to a home on Beach Road for a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, a man locked himself in a room and would not come out.

Officers eventually forced their way in and found Saamel in medical distress. He was immediately taken to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

On Sunday, the SIU was asked to investigate an incident in Toronto where a man died in police custody.
