HAMILTON, Ont. — The CFL’s outstanding defensive player in 2010 has re-signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Markeith Knowlton’s new deal will keep him in Hamilton through the 2013 season.

The six-foot, 205-pound linebacker was a versatile performer last season, registering 71 tackles.

The Arkansas native also added three sacks, three interceptions, a league-high six fumble recoveries and two blocked punts for a Ticats’ squad that posted a 9-9 record and finished second in the East Division standings.

“Markeith is simply the best strongside linebacker in the CFL and one of the league’s elite players,” Ticats GM Bob O’Billovich said in a release Tuesday. “He’s an extremely productive player on the field, an exciting player for our fans to watch, and a respected member of our locker- room.”

In 86 career games with the Ticats and B.C. Lions, Knowlton has registered 310 tackles, eight sacks and 12 interceptions.
