Wozniak to return from injury at Fed Cup

TORONTO — Aleksandra Wozniak will return from a long layoff at a Fed Cup tie against Serbia next month.

The Blainville, Que., native has been sidelined since September due to a forearm injury and an unspecified personal health issue.

She will be joined in Novi Sad, Serbia on Feb. 5-6 by Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., Rebecca Marino of Vancouver and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que.

Wozniak’s ranking, which peaked at 21st in the world in 2009, has dropped to 138th. In her absence, Marino has become Canada’s best women’s singles player at No. 104.

Sylvain Bruneau will be Canada’s non-playing captain.

A win in the World Group II tie will give Canada a spot in a World Group playoff. A loss means relegation to a World Group II playoff.

Last April, Canada swept Argentina in a World Group II playoff in Montreal to earn a spot in World Group II for the first time since 2007.

Bojana Jovanovski, Ana Jovanovic, Aleksandra Krunic and Tamara Curovic will play for Serbia.
