Speedskater Groves uncertain on future

OTTAWA — Canadian long-track speedskater Kristina Groves has still not finalized plans for next season as she continues to experience symptoms from a concussion and whiplash injury she suffered last fall.

“It’s really quite a challenging injury in that sense because I’ve tried to do some activity and then not felt too great a few hours later,” Groves said Wednesday on a conference call.

Groves, 34, hasn’t skated since falling at a World Cup event in Berlin last November. She announced last month that she will not compete again this season.

The Ottawa native has resumed mild physical activity but is unsure whether she’ll return to the oval.

“It’s a huge crossroads,” she said. “It’s exciting because the possibility of doing (other) things is out there but it’s also scary, especially now that I can’t do what I love to do most.”

Groves, a four-time Olympic medallist, won silver in the 1,500 metres and bronze in the 3,000 at the Vancouver Games last year.

“Part of me has this pretty strong desire to get back into the sporting world in some capacity,” she said. “But at this point honestly I’m just focusing on getting better.

“I think when the time comes and I need to make a decision I’ll know in my heart what I’ll want to do.”
