Ford talks budget, mayor’s powers

Mayor Rob Ford took a break from discussing the budget with City Hall reporters on Thursday to have some fun at his own expense.

His brother, Councillor Doug Ford, had recently told the Globe and Mail he wished the mayor’s office had more clout, similar to an American-style system.

Ford hadn’t yet responded.

When asked if he was hiding from Toronto media, Ford joked, “it’s hard to hide 300 pounds of fun.”

Ford added he was always happy with the amount of power he had, where his vote carries as much weight as that of any councillor.

City councillors and Ford gave the budget the final once-over on Thursday and the document is now in the hands of the executive committee. The final vote will take place on February 23.

Ford has promised no increases to property tax and no major service disruptions.
