Quenneville returns to coaching Blackhawks

CHICAGO — Joel Quenneville is back coaching the Chicago Blackhawks after missing the past week because of gastrointestinal bleeding that was caused by a small ulcer.

He was on the ice to lead the defending Stanley Cup champions through practice Wednesday for the first time since being hospitalized for several days.

The 52-year-old Quenneville started feeling discomfort last Tuesday night at his suburban Chicago home, went to the emergency room and was admitted on Wednesday with a problem that the Blackhawks’ team physician has said was brought on by aspirin. He was released Saturday.

The Blackhawks have won three of four games with assistant coach Mike Haviland filling in. Even so, they’re fighting to make the playoffs after winning it all a year ago. Their next game is Thursday at Nashville.
