A two-year-old girl critically injured in a weekend fire at her Lawrence and Weston Rd. apartment died in hospital Sunday night.
The toddler’s mother, 49, was also killed in the blaze. The victims have been identified as Bridget Milius and her daughter Samantha.
Bridget Milius was a student at George Brown College. For the past two months, she had been doing a placement at the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre.
“She was an amazing person, really giving, very compassionate, had a lot of empathy, really bonded with our clients. She really was an amazing person,” said Ken Theobald, an employee at the centre.
CityNews has learned that Milius and Samantha’s father had broken up several months ago, and were locked in a custody battle.
Flames broke out in the living room of the Rosemount Ave. apartment shortly before midnight on Saturday.
A neighbour called 9-1-1 and residents of the building were evacuated.
Fire officials are working to determine if proper precautions were in place.
“We found a smoke detector in the apartment of origin, we haven’t found a battery for it yet so we can’t confirm if it’s working or not,” said Mike Ross of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine the cause of the blaze. Officials say the initial damage estimate is $100, 000.
Autopsies on both victims were performed Monday, but results haven’t been released.
