BC drivers still making calls while on the road

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than 3,000 people were caught using electronic devices while driving in BC last month. Police also heard about 3,000 excuses from people who were trying to sweet-talk their way out of a ticket.

Corporal Jamie Chung admits he’s surprised that many people still use their cell phones while they’re behind the wheel. As far as the excuses go, Chung says just about all of them were pretty lame. “I thought I could use it when I stopped at a red light, or I didn’t want to miss an important call.”

He says one of the worst was, “Honestly officer, I was just on my way to the mall to buy a blue tooth.”

Not surprisingly, those not-so creative lines weren’t enough to get anyone out of a $167 ticket.

Distracted driving was a contributing factor in more than a hundred fatal crashes last year.
