The first full-face transplant in the United States has been successfully performed after a gruelling 15-hour surgery, Monday.
It took a team of more than 30 doctors, nurses and support staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to complete the complicated operation.
The surgery replaced the entire facial area of the 25-year-old patient, including the nose, lips, skin and even the muscles required to animate expression.
Nerves were also connected in a complicated procedure to power the muscles and provide senstaton to the patients face.
The surgery comes only months after the first full-face transplant was performed in Spain last year.
