Funeral for fallen Listowel firefighters set for Thursday

The funeral service for two volunteer firefighters who died battling a blaze in a dollar store last week will take place Thursday in the small town of Listowel, Ont.

Ken Rea, 56, of Atwood, Ont. and 30-year-old Raymond Walter of Listowel were inside a burning Dollar Stop when the roof collapsed last Thursday.

The memorial service for the volunteer firefighters will take place in the Listowel Memorial Arena at 2 p.m.

Kriss Snell of North Perth Volunteer Fire Department, for which both men volunteered, says condolences have been coming in from across the country.

And, according to Snell, officials are expecting a large number of emergency services personnel to attend the service.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Main Street West in Listowel, about an hour northwest of Kitchener, around 3:30 p.m. Thursday when a fire broke out at the Dollar Stop store, where roofers had previously been working.

The OPP said shortly after arriving, the two firefighters were unaccounted for. They were later found dead, presumably from injuries sustained while fighting the blaze.
