FREDERICTON — Josh Kidd scored the winning goal with four seconds remaining as the University of New Brunswick edged the Calgary Dinos 2-1 at the University Cup men’s hockey tournament Thursday.
After a scoreless first period, Jordan Clendenning opened the scoring for UNB on the power play 3:09 into the second.
However, Calgary tied it on a power play of its own just under a minute later when Teegan Moore put the puck behind Dustin Butler.
Earlier today, Marc-Andre Daneau scored midway through the third period to give the McGill Redmen a 2-1 win over the St. FX X-Men on Thursday in the opening game of the University Cup men’s hockey tournament.
The second-seeded Redmen, OUA champions, dominated play but were denied by St. FX netminder Joseph Perricone for 46 minutes. Perricone made 38 saves, including 19 in the second period alone.
“He was so good, we knew we had to drive the net, we knew the next goal would probably come on a rebound or something,” said Daneau.
CIS rookie of the year Jason Bast opened the scoring for the fifth-seeded X-Men on a beautiful solo effort at 15:06 of the second period. Bast slipped through the McGill defence and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Hubert Morin.
Guillaume Doucet finally beat Perricone early in the third to tie the game. The speedy centre came out of the corner and outwaited the sprawling goalie to slip it in the open net.
After Doucet’s equalizer, Daneau chipped in the winner from just outside the crease.
“There was a sense of frustration in the locker-room after the second period but we weren’t overly concerned, we weren’t panicking or anything,” said McGill coach Kelly Nobes. “We had a couple of come-from-behind wins during the season. We were relentless in the third.
“We had so many good scoring chances, we knew one was going to go in eventually.”
McGill’s relentless pressure caught the X-Men off guard from the get-go. And its efficient puck movement and speed created several scoring chances in the first two periods but Perricone was equal to the task.
The Redmen outshot St. FX 40-26.
The X-Men play Alberta on Friday while the Redmen will challenge the No. 3 Golden Bears on Saturday.
