Daycare worker tests positive for TB

An employee at a University of Toronto daycare centre has tested positive for tuberculosis.

Parents with children at the N’Sheemaehn Child Care Centre at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto have been notified of the employee’s TB case.

Only a handful of children are said to have direct contact with the affected employee, who is now home and doing well with their treatment.

The children will be tested for TB at the Hospital for Sick Children, as well as be monitored by public health officials for any possible symptoms.

“Everyone that has been potentially exposed has been contacted and dealt with,” Toronto Public Health official Nicole Ghanie-Opondo told CityNews.ca

TB is spread when an affected person coughs or sneezes during close, prolonged contact with others. Anyone who has casual contact with a person diagnosed with TB does not need to be tested.

Symptoms include:
•    A cough that lasts two weeks or more, especially if you cough up fluid or blood comes from your lungs when you cough
•    Fever
•    Weight loss
•    Night sweats
•    Loss of appetite
