New Ontario photo ID card available

The Ontario government has released a new photo ID card that will grant residents who do not have a driver’s licence access to services that require identification.

The card will be recognized as government-issued ID for Ontario residents who are visually-impaired, elderly or teenagers over the age of 16 who do not drive.

The card can be used for everything from opening a bank account to travelling but does not substitute a passport when travelling out of the country. And those who hold a driver’s licence are not eligible to apply for the card.

The new card will be valid for fives years at a cost of $35. It is purple and looks very similar to a driver’s licence with a clipped top-right corner to differentiate it from other cards.

About 1.5 million Ontario residents could use the card, the government estimates.

Residents will be able to apply for the card at 21 Service Ontario locations across the province and at all 300 locations by 2012.

To apply for the card, residents must provide original identity documents with their legal name, date of birth and signature.

Eight provinces already offer a similar government-issued photo ID card.
