Changes coming to Ontario’s drive clean program

TORONTO, Ont. – Several changes to Ontario’s drive clean program will be coming into effect Thursday, including removing mandatory tests on all vehicles less than seven years old.

Starting Sept. 1, the McGuinty government said you will no longer need to provide proof of testing on vehicles newer than seven years old when you have your plate sticker renewed.

Cleaner fuels, improved emissions technology and better vehicle maintenance are factors that make testing five-year-old vehicles unnecessary, according to drive clean officials.

Other changes include the ability to transfer vehicles among family members without testing, as well as the ability to skip testing when renewing registration after having passed a test in the previous year.

The government says the drive clean program has reduced smog causing pollutants by nearly 266,000 tonnes since the program began.
