Markham couple died of smoke inhalation

A husband and wife who died in a Markham garage fire last Thursday died of smoke inhalation, York Regional police said Tuesday.

Officers said the post-mortem examinations have been completed and there were no signs of trauma to either person.

The names of the victims, a 48-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, have not been disclosed. They left behind two teenaged children.

Witnesses reported hearing and feeling an explosion before flames erupted in the garage of a house on Kentland Street, near Markham Road and Major MacKenzie Drive.

A candlelight vigil was held for the pair on Saturday night.

“It really did bring the community closer today, and just for their children, in a great way, to show them that we are there for them and this is just the first step of what we are going to do,” said friend Harrish Nithiananean.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire. The blaze is being considered suspicious.
