‘Dolphin Tale’ knocks ‘The Lion King’ off box office throne

In the battle of the beasts, dolphins beat lions – at the box office.

Dolphin Tale raked in $14.2 million over the weekend, knocking The Lion King out of top spot.

Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., and Ashley Judd star in the movie, which is based on the true story of strangers who team up to help an injured dolphin.

Disney’s re-release of the 1994 movie The Lion King had been the top earner for two consecutive weekends. It fell to third with $11.1 million.

Moneyball, starring Brad Pit, took in $12.5 million in ticket sales. The film, which follows the Oakland Athletics as their general manager rebuilds the team based on little-used statistics, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.
