Child predator Stanley Tippett declared dangerous offender

A judge ruled Monday that child predator Stanley Tippett, who was convicted for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, is a dangerous offender.

“He has showed a pattern of persistent, aggressive behaviour,” Judge Bruce Glass said in a Peterborough court. Tippett will now face an indefinite jail term.

The judge made his decision based on seven charges related to the abduction and assault that happened on Aug. 6, 2008, which include kidnapping, sexual assault and sexual interference.

The Crown was seeking a dangerous offender designation for Tippett, a father of five. If the judge had refused the Crown’s request, Tippett would only be sentenced for the convictions.

Tippett picked up the 12-year-old girl in Peterborough three years ago and drove her 70 kilometres away to Courtice where he attacked her behind a high school.

He has Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare condition that causes facial and cranial deformities, which allowed several people to point him out as the attacker.

Tippett was also a main suspect in the death of Toronto teen Sharmini Anandavel. The Grade 9 student was reported missing on June 12, 1999 after she left her home to start a new job. Tippett had lived in the same Don Mills apartment and moved two weeks before her disappearance.

Sharmini’s remains were found in North York four months later. No one was charged.
