The world’s largest Ronald McDonald House opened in Toronto on Friday after six years of planning and construction.
The “Home of Hope,” a place for ill children and their families, is located on McCaul Street near Sick Kids and Mount Sinai hospitals.
The Ronald McDonald Foundation said it had “outgrown” its home on Gerrard Street, and were constantly turning away people in need. About 70 per cent of families who needed a place to stay during out-of-town treatment were turned away, the Foundation said.
The new structure has 96 bedrooms and can accommodate 81 families per night, about three times as many people than the Gerrard Street house.
“The opening of the new Ronald McDonald House Toronto represents a significant and exciting milestone in the history of the House, the city and country,” Jane Marco, the facility’s executive director said in a statement.
The house has a common kitchen, gardens, a playground, and spaces for an accredited private school and child-focused programming.
