Toronto’s War of 1812 Bicentennial programs begin this month

TORONTO – A series of major events and legacy projects will define the City of Toronto’s two-year-long War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration, which kicks off this month.

From January 2012 until June 2013, hundreds of events and programs will take place at locations across the city.

“I encourage everyone to come and visit the city to take part in the bicentennial events and celebrate this important milestone in our history,” said Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

The co-chairs of the City’s War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration Steering Committee, presented the bicentennial lineup on December 8 at Toronto City Hall.

Over the next two years, the Bicentennial Commemoration will revitalize the city’s collective memory of a war that shaped Canada’s history.

Organizers are hopeful that it will leave behind an historic legacy for generations to come.
