A woman accused of killing her three daughters and her husband’s other wife is testifying in her own defence today.
Tooba Yahya, 42, is on the stand in Kingston, Ont., where she is on trial for murder along with her husband and son.
Yahya, Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their eldest son, Hamed, 21, have each pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.
They’re accused of killing Shafia sisters, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Shafia’s other wife in a polygamous marriage.
Their bodies were found in a car at the bottom of a canal in Kingston on June 30, 2009, when the Montreal family was heading home after a trip to Niagara Falls, Ont.
The Crown alleges that Shafia in particular was upset that the girls were dating and telling authorities they didn’t feel safe at home, and that they were killed to restore family honour.
