Former Habs, Blues exec Caron dead at 82

MONTREAL — Ron Caron, a longtime assistant general manager with the Montreal Canadiens who went on to become GM of the St. Louis Blues, has died. He was 82.
Nicknamed the “Old Professor,” Caron worked under GM Sam Pollock in Montreal and helped the team win six Stanley Cups in the 1970s.
Caron was named general manager of the St. Louis Blues in 1983 and spent a decade in the position. He died Monday night in Montreal, a Blues team spokesman confirmed Tuesday morning.
The Canadiens also confirmed his passing on the team’s Twitter account.
“The Canadiens would like to extend their sympathies to the family of Ronald (Prof) Caron, who passed away last night at the age of 82,” the tweet said.
The NHL Alumni organization also sent out a note on Twitter.
“RIP to former NHL executive, Ron Caron. The Old Professor won 6 Stanley Cups with (at)CanadiensMTL as Asst. GM in the 1970s.”
There was no immediate word on the cause of death.
