People advised to take caution with their pets in severe cold

TORONTO, Ont. – Anyone who stepped outside Saturday was quickly greeted with a blast of cold air.
On such a chilly day, it’s important to remember that the temperatures can also be dangerous for pets if they don’t have the proper shelter.
Just because Fluffy or Fido have a fur coat doesn’t mean they can stay outside all day, according to Brad Dewar with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
“There’s a concern for the animals getting extremely cold, they can suffer damage through their paws when the temperatures drop very low,” Dewar said.
It’s best to prepare your pet for the conditions if you plan to take them for a short walk.
“For instance, putting little booties on any of your animals paws when they’re going outside,” Dewar said. “A sweater or jacket (can) help them with the cold temperatures.”
It’s important to remember that salt can damage the paws of pets as well.
