Expert tips to help you drop the extra pounds

Not many of us like stepping on the scale, now imagine doing that with a whole city watching.

That’s what is planned for Monday, as Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Coun. Doug Ford hold a public weigh-in at City Hall as part of a six-month weight-loss challenge.

If you’re looking to join the Ford brothers in dropping some pounds, Weight Watchers Leader Lindsey Norman says you don’t have to give up your favourite snacks or foods.

“You teach people how to eat in the real world, there’s nothing that you can’t have,” Norman says. “Having everybody on board with it. It’s not a diet, it’s just healthy eating, having the things you love in moderation.”

She says you need to plan ahead, start slow and surround yourself with supportive people.

With regular exercise playing such a key role in permanent exercise, she also recommends looking at your weight loss not as a diet, but instead as a lifestyle change.

Other suggestions include using the online support systems and tools out there for those trying to drop the pounds. Most bookstores also offer books on the weight loss process.

Many experts also agree that you don’t need any of the fancy and expensive special food as part of your weight loss program.

Instead, moderation and a balanced diet can be just as effective.
