It took a Valterri Filppula shootout goal to do it, but the Detroit Red Wings extended their franchise-record home winning streak to a gaudy 16 games and their overall streak of W’s to six.

The Red Wings have the winningest goaltender in the league this season in Jimmy Howard, a guy who played his way into this week’s All-Star Game despite not even being included in the original fan ballot. They have a core of try-hard, dangerous veteran Detroit lifers: Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Jiri Hudler, Tomas Holmstrom, et al. And 36-year-old Todd Bertuzzi (two spin-o-rama goals this week!) is playing like 29-year-old Todd Bertuzzi.

That’s why the Wings have plowed through the NHL’s toughest division to the top of our ranks.
