Leap Day is here: special birthdays; special Google doodle

Leap Day is a big day for leaplings — the one in about 1,500 people who were born on Feb. 29.

And that includes 680News reporter Eva Fragiskatos.

“So really, today I will be seven years old. That’s the perk about having a Leap Year birthday. You don’t age, you stay young,” Fragiskatos said.

She also said besides the curiosity value of being born on Feb. 29, there can be problems. For instance, Facebook didn’t recognize her birthdate.

While some people consider a Leap Year to be unlucky, others say it’s lucky.

In some European countries, tradition has it women can propose to men on Feb. 29.

To mark the day, Google posted a special doodle featuring leaping frogs. Feb. 29 is also “The Barber of Seville” composer Gioachino Rossini’s 200th birthday and the doodle also honours the Italian composer by featuring a frog in a barber’s chair.
