Provincial opposition parties calling for ORNGE probe

Opposition parties at Queen’s Park are teaming up, calling on the government to create a legislative committee that would investigate ORNGE.

The demands come a few weeks after police launched a criminal probe into the air ambulance service.

The provincial New Democrats and Progressive Conservatives said it won’t conflict with the criminal probe that’s underway.

The OPP is investigating financial irregularities with the ORNGE air ambulance service.

But New Democrat France Gelinas said a committee would have a broader mandate and could look at issues around quality of care. She said it would protect whistle-blowers who may be afraid to come forward.

“The sooner you give those people a chance to air what they know, the quicker we can turn the page on this,” Gelinas explained.

The NDP said ORNGE is losing pilots and other front-line workers who have lost confidence in management over the scandal involving high salaries and questionable business practices.
