Parkdale resident helps boy during alleged abduction attempt

A Good Samaritan stepped in to help a little boy avoid an alleged abductor in Parkdale this week.

Police say the 10-year-old boy was walking in the King Street and Cowan Avenue area around 5 p.m. Tuesday when a stranger grabbed him from behind. The man allegedly tried to drag the youngster across the street, but the boy broke free and fell to the ground.

Resident Robin North, who saw it all happen from across the street, ran to the boy’s aid.

“I was just locking my door and I heard a child scream, ‘No, No, No.’ He sounded very scared,” North told CityNews. “The boy was pulling backwards … and the man was dragging him this way, so I yelled, ‘Hey what’s going on,’ and the man looked up at me and then dropped the boy…”

The 33-year-old suspect took off on a streetcar but was arrested a short time later.

Rufus Folkes was charged with assault, attempted abduction of a person under 14 and failure to comply with probation. He was due to appear in court Wednesday morning.
