‘Monsieur Lazhar,’ ‘A Dangerous Method’ competing for Genie Awards

A Quebec film is leading the pack with 13 nominations ahead of Thursday night’s Genie Awards, which celebrates the best in Canadian film.

Café de Flore, written and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (he also helmed C.R.A.Z.Y.), follows two seemingly unconnected — and unconventional — love stories in Paris and Montreal.

The dreamy romance is up for best picture and will be competing with the much better known A Dangerous Method.

The film is directed by Torontonian David Cronenberg and stars Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley.

Cronenberg is also nominated for best director, while Fassbender and Mortenson picked up acting nods. In total, A Dangerous Method was nominated for 11 awards.

The Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar, another Quebec film, is up for nine awards.  The film, directed by Philippe Falardeau, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Thursday night, it’s up for best picture and best director, as well as several acting awards.

The 32nd Genie Awards ceremony will begin 8 p.m. Thursday in Toronto.
