Toronto smashes all-time heat record for March

Toronto has never seen heat like this in March.

The temperature reached 26 C at Pearson International Airport Thursday afternoon, eclipsing the previous all-time March record of 25.6 C set in 1945.

“Another one bites the dust – and this one is huge,” said CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles.

“We have nothing on the books about heat like this in the month. It is a very rare event for us, but it looks like it is coming to an end.”

The record comes as a historic heat wave sweeps across the province. About 160 daytime high records have been broken in Ontario this week alone, Environment Canada says.

Toronto also topped the previous March 22 record of 24.4.

Wednesday’s high of 23.3 C at Pearson airport broke the record of 17.8 C set in 1938.
