The Flaming Lips to perform at Yonge-Dundas Square in June

The Flaming Lips will play a free show at Yonge-Dundas Square this summer as part of the North by Northeast (NXNE) music festival.

The Grammy-award winning veterans of alt-rock, known for their elaborate live shows, are set to hit the stage on June 16.

The band, formed in Oklahoma in 1983, released its latest studio album Embryonic in the fall of 2009. The group released a remake of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon that same year.

Festival organizers also announced Tuesday that Bad Religion, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, and Matthew Good are also headlining free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Last year, more than 110,000 people turned out to the square over a four-day stretch to catch free NXNE shows, including performances by Devo and Men Without Hats.

The 18th edition of NXNE runs June 11-17 at various venues around the city, hosting more than 650 artists. About 300,000 people are expected to attend shows, generating nearly $50 million for the city, the organizer says.
