Woman seriously hurt in Hwy. 401 crash in Ajax

A woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Ajax Tuesday morning.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. as a car was getting on the westbound highway at Westney Road. The victim, said to be in her 50s, was rushed to a local hospital, where an air ambulance was expected to transport her to St. Michael’s Hospital.

The woman reportedly suffered head injuries.

“The Mazda Protégé from southbound Westney Road was entering the 401 westbound on the ramp, lost control and for whatever reason didn’t take the turn. It ended up rolling through the grassy median and came to rest on the shoulder of the 401 westbound,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

The OPP had closed the Westney Road ramps to the westbound 401 and the right lane of Highway 401 near Westney. The area reopened around 9:45 a.m.
