Did Chad Kroeger cheat on girlfriend with Avril Lavigne?

The news of Avril Lavigne’s recent engagement to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger surprised us all. But did it also surprise Kroeger’s longtime girlfriend?

RadarOnline is reporting that Kristen DeWitt, the Ohio woman whom Chad dated for “years,” was blindsided by his engagement. Furthermore, it seems that Avril may have been the “other woman” in their relationship.

“The moment u find out ur ex of four months engaged the girl he was cheating on you with! #classic,” DeWitt wrote on her protected Twitter account, after Kroeger, 37, and Lavigne, 27, went public with their engagement.

DeWitt, 27, reportedly began dating the Nickelback frontman after his breakup from girlfriend Marianne Goriuk in 2002. As of April, Kroeger was still describing his girlfriend as “a girl from Ohio” in interviews. (DeWitt is from Salem, Ohio.) The couple didn’t split up until in May… or at least, that’s what DeWitt thought.

“His engagement to Avril completely caught Kristen off guard and the timelines don’t match up. Chad had to have been seeing Avril behind Kristen’s back,” a friend told RadarOnline.

Sure enough, when the two singers announced their engagement last week, reports said they’d been dating for six months. That would put the start of their relationship in February, when the two collaborated on a song for Lavigne’s upcoming album. It would also mean that Kroeger was two-timing DeWitt with the “Girlfriend” singer.

Apparently, DeWitt remained in the dark about Kroeger’s other lady love. Prior to the big announcement, RadarOnline asked DeWitt if her ex was seeing anyone else, to which she responded, “not to my knowledge, the man barely has time to eat during the day. This is the first I’ve heard of it. We’ve remained close.”

Chad, who has never been married, popped the question to Lavigne on Aug. 8. “He makes her so happy. Both of their families could not be more excited,” a family source told People. Singer-songwriter Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley for four years.

So, is there any truth to the rumors that Kroeger was cheating on his ex? And if he was still dating DeWitt, was Avril even aware of it? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see what other details unfold!
