Toronto police have charged a 19-year-old York University student with sexual assault after a woman was allegedly assaulted in her bedroom at a campus residence.
Police said a group of students were gathered for a birthday party at a student residence at the Keele Street campus.
An 18-year-old woman went to her bedroom and a man followed her, closed the door, shut off the lights and allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Const. Wendy Drummond told 680News that the suspect and the woman are both students at the university.
The alleged assault occurred at about 2:24 a.m on Friday at the campus.
Mohammad Hadian, 19, of Mississauga, was arrested and charged with sexual assault.
Meanwhile, the York Federation of Students is deeply concerned over the alleged sexual assault.
“I think students are definitely concerned that this is something that continues to happen,” Safiyah Husein, vice-president equity of YFS told 680News.
The YFS is urging the university to take increased action, including a suggested mandatory equity course where “we can change the dialogue to prevent some of these sexual assaults and violence on campus before they happen.”
In July, a string of sexual assaults at the Keele campus briefly boosted security.
