America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne said she had undergone a double mastectomy after finding she carries a gene which increased the risk of developing breast cancer in an interview with U.K.’s Hello! magazine.
The 60-year-old, who’s married to Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, had already battled colon cancer in the past and opted for the surgery as a precaution against further cancer.
“As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: The odds are not in my favour,” “I’ve had cancer before and I didn’t want to live under that cloud. I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy.”
Osbourne said the decision was a no-brainer and the operation took 13 hours. However she wanted no pity, especially now she could really start enjoying her life as a grandparent.
“I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to Pearl,” she said about her son Jack’s daughter who came into the world in April. “I didn’t even think of my breasts in a nostalgic way. I just wanted to be able to live my life without that fear all the time.”
Before the surgery Osbourne had also found out that her breast implants had leaked into her stomach wall, and now she was “definitely done” with cosmetic surgery.
“You can’t buy your youth back, no matter how much money you’ve got. I won’t be going under the knife again,” she said.
