Shoppers at a North York Ikea were shocked to see an unexpected customer.
A tiny monkey dressed in a winter coat was seen outside the store around 2 p.m., Sunday.
The monkey was on the loose for about 30 minutes before being caught by Animal Control.
Police say the animal let itself out of a crate in a car and then managed to exit the vehicle.
News of the monkey caused #IkeaMonkey to become a trending topic on Twitter and even spawned two parody Twitter accounts.
Police say the owners came forward to claim the monkey and were directed to Animal Control. They were fined $240.
The animal will remain in the custody of Toronto Animal Services until a suitable sanctuary can be found for its relocation.
It is illegal to have a primate as a pet in Toronto. [View the story “Monkey found roaming North York Ikea” on Storify]
