Mirvish celebrating 50 years in entertainment

The Mirvish family celebrated 50 years in the entertainment industry on Wednesday with the launch of its fall theatre season.
“It’s pretty unusual for any family to survive 50 years of live theatre. It’s such an unpredictable business,” David Mirvish told Breakfast Television on Wednesday.
“We’re very proud.”
Mirvish said the 2013-2014 season will begin with Les Miserables. Producer Cameron Mackintosh has completely restaged the musical for its 25th Toronto anniversary, he said.
Les Misérables opened in Toronto in 1989 and ran until 1990, when the cast began a national tour. The musical returned in 1991, 1992, 1998 and 2005.
“It’s a fresh, exciting, wonderful production,” Mirvish said.
Other shows on the slate are Disney’s Aladdin, which will debut in Toronto before heading to Broadway next year; and Once, a stage adaptation of the 2006 movie.
The season includes Heartbeat of Home, from the producers of Riverdance; God of Carnage, a play of about two sets of parents; Arrabal, a tango-based musical and an all-Canadian production of Cats.
Metamorphosis, based on the Franz Kafka novel, has already shown in Oslo and London, Mirvish said.
“It’s the first time it will be seen in North America,” Mirvish said.
And The Last Confession, about a pope that lasted only 33 days, is unexpectedly timely.
“For the first time in 600 years, a pope has resigned,” Mirvish said.
“I’m looking forward to it.”
