Money issues among main concerns among Ontarians, survey shows

The economy is top of mind for most Ontarians, according to the latest survey from Abacus Data.

The survey shows job creation is the top issue with 22 per cent, followed by the economy at 18 per cent and then managing the debt and deficit.

The big three money issues push health care all the way to fourth spot with just nine per cent of respondents calling it their biggest worry.

And Ontario’s mood is split when it comes to going to the polls this spring, according to the survey.

David Coletto of Abacus Data said 40 per cent want Premier Kathleen Wynne to call an election for a mandate while 38 per cent don’t want to go to the polls, but those who do are Conservative.

“Two thirds of them said that they should call an election. They want another shot,” Coletto said.

And the results will present a question for new democrat leader, Andrea Horwath.

“Half of her supporters want one and half of her supporters don’t. So she’s in a bit of a dilemma when it comes to her own support base on whether to pull the plug this spring,” Coletto said.

Politically, it provides a fork in the road for Wynne and her minority government as the two opposition parties have vastly different ideas on how to get Ontario’s economic engine back in gear.
