An Oshawa man who was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s two-year-old son was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Michael Monckton, 30, was convicted of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm in Keagan Davis’s death.
He will serve 15 years before being eligible for parole, lawyer Brad Pearson told CityNews.ca.
Pearson is a lawyer at the law firm, Boggs Levin. Raymond Boggs represented Monckton in court.
Monckton was also sentenced to five years for the charge of assault causing bodily harm. That sentence will be served concurrently, Pearson said.
Monckton maintains he is innocent and plans to appeal, Pearson said.
A murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence and Monckton could have faced up to 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
Keagan’s mother Leigh-Ann Cooper came home from work on Jan. 5, 2010, to find Monckton performing CPR on her son. When paramedics arrived, the boy had no vital signs.
An autopsy found he died of blunt force trauma.
The court heard the boy had other injuries, including broken bones and severe bruising, before his death. The injuries, some of which had healed, could have occurred in the weeks and possibly even the months leading up to Keagan’s death, the court heard.
