Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop dies at 96

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has died at the age of 96.

Koop served as surgeon general through much of the 1980s.

During his tenure he was an advocate for many forms of social awareness. As an Evangelical Christian, he shocked his Conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

Koop also faught to end smoking in the United States. As a former pipe smoker, he claimed cigarettes were as addictive as heroin or cocaine.
