Time change this weekend: Spring forward

Welcome to the shortest weekend of the year.

Because of daylight saving time, this weekend will be one hour shorter than normal as we moved our clocks ahead.

The time change came into effect at 2 a.m. on Sunday, but many people made the change before going to bed on Saturday night, setting all available time pieces ahead one hour.

Most digital devices, like cellphones and computers, make the change automatically – but it’s a good idea to double check before Monday morning rolls around.

Standard time was originally created by Canada’s own Sir Sandford Fleming, and daylight time originated in Germany and gradually spread to other non-tropical countries.

While Ontario isn’t the only province coping with the change, daylight saving time isn’t a Canada-wide initiative.

The majority of Saskatchewan uses central standard time year round. The province has been debating switching to springing forward and falling backward. Sections of Quebec employ Atlantic time throughout the entire year.

Other machines to check:
•    Microwave ovens
•    VCRs or DVDs
•    Clock in your car
•    Any automatic timer lights
•    Coffee maker

You’re also advised to change the batteries in your smoke alarm. Even though they’re rarely used, they don’t last forever.
